Introduction

This page includes links to some information regarding private and alternative education.

Some parents like ourselves may not be satisfied with either the educational material provided to our children in the public school system, or with the emotional/psychological 'fit' between our children and that provided by the public schools.  Yet others may find that they would like to have more extra-curricular activities provided to their children or that their children are also gifted in the arts and would like to have that talent developed further within the school day.  The reason why one school is better for a child than another are as varied as the families themselves.

It is hoped that this page can give you the parent, some leads towards investigating school options for your child which may not always be obvious.  Please note that not all the alternative schools are fee paying, although most are.

The Academy for Gifted Children.  This will bring you to the web page of 'PACE' -- the only private gifted school in Ontario.  Located in Richmond Hill.  Teaches grades 1 through 12.

Alternative Schools in the Toronto District Public School System.  This brings you to a page which lists all of the alternative schools (and thier web links) in the TDSB which are non fee paying.

Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA).  This is the web site for Montessori schools in your area.  Please note that any school may call themselves a 'Montessori' school, and although they may be great places, they do not necessarily follow the 'true' Montessori teachings.  Those school which are registered with CCMA have met and have been licensed by the provincial licensing authority and 'are evaluated to maintain the highest standards of authentic Montessori education' (from web site).

Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI).  This web site is the regulative body for independent schools.  Includes list and information on independent schools which are members of this body.

Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario (CIS).  Similar to the site listed above, this organisation is a regulatory one which aims to evaluate the quality of independent schools. This web site includes links to private schools who have registered with CIS.  Clicking on the listing link on their home page will bring you to their listing.

Our Kids Go to School Publication.  An incredible site which lists and reviews all the private and alternative schools in Ontario (also includes a few schools in other provinces).  They also publish a magazine which has the smae information on it.  This site also (as a bonus) includes reviews of Summer camps for children.

Private Schools Worldwide.  Feeling the urge to move or re-locate?  This informative web site includes many links to private schools world wide as well as lots of helpful information regarding choosing the best school for your child.

Road College International Junior and Senior High School. A new alternative private school, understanding and sympathetic to gifted children, is opening for the Fall of 2003.  This school is run by Aidan Marty who has her Masters in Education and who has studied gifted children.  If you are considering a private school in the Ottawa Region, I urge to you visit the Road College's web site at www.roadcollege.com. Road College is a member of the OFIS.
