Introduction
There are many reasons why you might want to have your child tested privately. Perhaps your child does not 'perform on demand'? Maybe they have difficulty concentrating in a group situation and thus would perform better one on one? Or, you may want your child tested before the schools will test as you believe that the test scores may add some credence to your own observations and will assist you in procuring a better educational plan. As you can see, the reasons to have your child tested are varied and all valid.
Undergoing testing, depending on how many test instruments are used, can cost from $500 CND to over $1500 CND. These costs, can however, be offset by your own private health insurance. While not covered under OHIP, private insurance often covers 'psychological counselling/psychological services/clinical psychology'. Submitting a 'form' document rather than one that has stated that the charges are for IQ assessment, would probably be the safer option. Call your insurance company (if you're like me and can't find the paper stacks they send you yearly) and ask how much you are covered for during the year, and what percentage you are responsible for.
Here are the names of psychologists that have had extensive experience in the field of testing, are knowledgeable about gifted issues, and have been recommended through word of mouth.
